Self Isolation And Anxiety

Day 1!

Sooooo I’ve been meaning to start up my blog for ages… I mean I even wrote it on my ’40 things to do before I’m 40 list!’ But circumstances now mean that surely I dont have a reason not to!

Now I’m not going to lie, it’s not the content I was expecting, I had visions of a budgeting/comping lifestyle blog but hopefully my ramblings will help others in this unprecedented times and actually I think for my anxiety at the moment it will probably help me a lot more!

So today as a family we started self isolation: I have got symptoms (dry cough, sore throat) and following government advice we now have to self isolate.

This has not been an easy decision as my anxiety is at a peak point and I hate letting people down but I now realise that we have a duty of care to stop this virus spreading. In myself I feel okay, but my cough is very persistent. I feel so sad that I’m not at my school on these last days to support staff and students.

Today has been surreal, with a mixed bag of emotions but I thought I’d give you an insight into the timeline of my thoughts and actions:

7.30am Tell Oscar we’re self isolating and he cried. This surprised me as he has always said he would like to Home School but he said he was scared and he would miss ‘normal’ life…. me too buddy.

8am Start doubting my ‘symptoms’.. is a cough really enough to stay away from work, Is it the big COVID19 or just a cough? Wish I could be tested and  find out for sure…What if this isn’t it and I get it later? Will I get paid? Should I report to the authorities? Do I need a note or black bloody cross on the door?

8.30 Found my contract and check sick pay terms… but does this count as sick? Call 111 told that unless I’m dying to check online, check my symptoms online and told to stay home, keep family off and stay a metre away from family. Oscar tries to cuddle me and I dont know whether I can? Hubby’s work need ‘proof’ were self isolating…what the hell is that? An MP3 of me coughing!

9.00 Friend drops off some drink, leaves it on the drive and we talk/shout at at distance.

9.30 Decide to get us dressed and shower. Think we must do this so I’m not sitting for 14 days in my pjs… choose leggings and baggy jumper! Goodbye Jean’s… when will I see you again!

10.00 Do some work with Oscar, deliver a powerpoint on ‘The Willow Pattern’ thought my own child would be easy but a lot of patience was needed!

11.00 Phone both my nans. I am now upto date with all the soaps I do not watch.

12.00 Lunch… Can we officially open the emergency coronavirus pringles? Should I be rationing what we eat now!

1.00 Cough is worse when I talk, my brother tells me to rest it when I call him to bore him with my new conspiracy theories!

2.00 Sit down to do maths with Oscar.Where are all our pens? Go on  Amazon, they’re not delivering PRIME anymore… spend half hour searching for things I can not buy anymore and tutting!

3.30 Had a little afternoon nap. As J is also self isolating suddenly realised we may not see him for 14 days. Rumours the schools will close Friday being batted around.

5.00 Sit down for our new favourite tea time show, Coronavirus Update.

5.20 Schools closed Friday! At last!

5.23 Wait… what’s a key worker?How will this work? Am I required in?

5.30 Exams cancelled…what the hell does that mean for J?

5.45 What does this actually mean???

6-9pm Lots of calls,WhatsApps to family friends trying to make sense of all the information/rumours… Will we lockdown? Is Prince Phillip dead? Have I got enough food/toilet rolls? Shit… I forgot sanitary towels and razors, look on amazon £10 for a delivery Maybe next week: My brother has a suggestion about getting pregnant and not needing them! Do we need to move nan? Will she be okay? Should I cancel Sky Sports? Why is my throat feeling like I cant breathe? Will our marriage survive self isolation? Who keeps switching the bloody kettle plug off? How will they give J the results he deserves? Are the army on the way? Do children really not get ill? Can you drink with paracetamol ?Will the electric go off? Look at torches on Amazon, and wind up radios. All out of stock. Will I need to box dye my hair? Will our bills get paid? Can I write and send the mothers day cards or will I pass the lurgy.

My head is spinning.

9.30 Try and watch TV. Hubby says I do not need to keep shouting at the adverts, they were pre booked. But the mothers day adverts make me sad. And Hillary Blinds will not have a fast delivery when we’re on lockdown.

10.30 Really orgasms kill the virus hubby? You have high hopes for the next 14 days!

11-5am Lie in bed but do not sleep.

5.30am Hear birds singing…. Breathe

The Unsaid

I suffer from severe anxiety… There I said it! Wasn’t hard was it? Yet why do I feel so ashamed? I’ve suffered with anxiety over the last couple of years, triggered in part by work but as I learn to ‘manage’ it I wonder whether it was always there, lurking, ready to pounce! I call it IT, because to me it is a real thing, its not always there but the thought of what happens to me  when it appears out the blue to surprise me can fill me with terror. I’m ashamed to say that before IT came in my life I was full of prejudice against this sort of illness…Why can’t they just pull themselves together, they always look OK to me so they must be putting it on for an ‘easy life’. Well its not an easy life… Its the worst illness I have ever had. During bad attacks I can hardly breathe, I mean how can you not breathe!? Buts that’s how it feels and every breath feels so cold. In my head I always imagine I look like the people in the movies sucking on a brown paper bag…in reality I know I look a mess with my head in my hands, trying to control my breathing while shaking uncontrollably.
This illness isnt just about feeling sad, in fact the physical symptoms are by far the hardest and most difficult thing to acknowledge.
Having many a time been curled up on my bathroom floor, unable to move for fear of being sick (or other horrible actions!), I hate how pathetic ive become.
Frozen in fear at my local shopping centre, unable to get my thoughts together.
If you imagine that nervous feeling you get before a job interview, date etc thats how i feel 24/7, on edge, jittery, scared.
Ive learnt that this is called the fight or flight mode and that my body is in the state constantly.
It stalks me quietly, waiting for me to let my guard down and bang it appears.
I have such a loving and understanding family that have helped me through this but I get so ashamed at how I must seem to them.
Im learning to manage IT with CBT,accept it even and face it full on, cause thats what you do with all bullys…isnt it?

So this is my first punch at IT, admitting its there, but letting you know you wont beat me.
